2010-05-18 Loft

As you can see things have quickly begun to fill up the new storage building and become disorganized.  Here's a pic of my junky new work bench, some left over insulation, my saw horses, etc.  Those containers in the right foreground are some of my emergency supplies for 72-hour kits.  Those are to be used in case of disaster or when you need to leave home in a hurry (say, for instance, to avoid a hurricane).

These things need a neater home.

I had planned on keeping floor space clear for larger things.  I still have things in rental storage like my gun case that needs to be brought here.  It's tall and obviously wouldn't fit on a shelf, but those plastic containers you see would store quite nicely in a loft.

So, I'm building a loft.  It's more of a shelf really.  When I'm done, the particle board you see standing below it will be used for a surface to stack things on.

I still need to cut and nail up cross members to brace those wavy outside boards.

The loft, or shelf, will span 16 feet and has a width of 3 feet.  It's a little over 3 feet below the center of the roof so I could stack 2 plastic containers there.

Because of the roof line, the clearance tapers down to about 16 inches.  When I'm done, with it, I'll stack as many of the smaller containers as I can on it.  Then the floor will be free for larger items and shelving for food storage.

The next page will show what the completed loft looks like now.
