2009-10-15 Our 5th Anniversary
Day 6 - October 13th Part 1
Monday was another kick-back day for us to do nothing but sit on the beach and read.
But Tuesday we decided to drive around and see some sights. The first we came upon was this nature center.
There is an adjacent lake where Linda found lots to photograph.
But as we approached the nature center we were warned of the wild animals.
Aaaaahhhhhhhggggggg! Scary looking wild animals, aren't they?
Oh, and this creature looked really menacing.
Not to mention this guy.
Good think we weren't nuts! (wait a minute, that didn't sound quite right)
The trees on the walk through the little park adjacent the nature center were so unusual.
We had to return another day and take lots more photos of them.
But
on this day we decided to move on. The welcome center for Gulf
Shores / Orange Beach provided some suggestions for things to see while
on the Alabama gulf coast.
One
place we didn't want to miss was Doc's Seafood Shack. Some dear
friends in Memphis had suggested the place. They said the food
was delicious and reasonably priced. I think they underestimated
it.
This
is definitely one place we'll have to return to. Linda loves
seafood. I don't eat shell fish but there were lots of choices
for other type fish available and it was all delicious.
Before it got too dark we decided to pay a visit to the state pier and see if we could watch the sun set.
The state pier got blown away by the last hurricane and it took them a couple of years to replace it.
It's
a fishing pier as well as for sightseers like these little Killdeers
who are tuning their sights to see what bait they could find that some
fisherman dropped.
Like I said, it's a fishing pier.
Look
closely (very closely). Yes, this guy is actually holding a fish
he caught. Uh, maybe you'd better get a magnifying glass.
And here's a couple caught by one of the real fishermen there.
We
never saw our sunset, too many clouds and the wrong time of year I
guess. This time of year the sun seems to set behind that point
where all the tall condomineums are located. But the city lights
on Orange Beach are pretty.
Just
before I left I decided to see if my little snapshot camera would take
a night photo. I sat it on the rail of the pier and shot this
photo. It's really strange looking but I kind of like it for a
parting shot.
