2009-02-14 Completed!
I promised Linda
I'd finish the bookcase for her Valentine's Day present.
I was hoping things would go a little smoother. I lacked two boards having enough for the last row
of shelves. So it was
off to Lowe's first thing.
When I got to
Lowe's, I decided to shop for paint or stain for the
bookcase. We'd settled on an Antique Barn Red color. I couldn't find
the paint we wanted, I couldn't find the boards I wanted, what's
worse, it rained lightly all day. Work
wasn't out of the question. I could
still work but I'd have to rush out, make my lumber cuts, cover my
miter saw with a rain proof cover, and rush back in with tools and
board in hand. I did a lot of rushing
I ran into problems with my very first cut. The dado slot was too
tight. I had to widen it to get the board to fit.
I finally got the last shelf
board installed. I don't know which is more obvious, my sweaty
red neck or the thinning white hair at the back of my head.
After wiping off the running glue with a rag I grapped my air brad gun
and nailed the board down. Good thing you can't see the dozens
of mistake I've made.
I used my new router to cut a decorative contour in the base of the 1"
X 4" that I used to tie everything all together. Mitering the
corner was not easy. Don't look too close at that.
Ok, you can look close. Not perfect but it suits our
purposes.
Last of all here's a wide-angles shot. Isn't she a
beauty? 65 feet of book shelf space and 26 cubic feet of box
storage under the window seat. I still have to reinstall the trim
at the corners and around the ceiling.
You should see it painted and full of books. That's on the next page.
