2014-05-16 Deck Day-2 -- Sill Repair
When I tore out the blocks of the top step
I uncovered a problem I wasn't sure I could solve.
The sill was
rotted. Time to call out the big guns. I called Mike
Thigpen's crew. Mike sent a
couple of his guys over to do a top
quality job as usual.
They carefully removed my deteriorated siding. We don't have the money to replace it right
now. I didn't want it
to look awful after repairs and I wanted it to be
structurally sound when
done. That's my main reason for calling
the professionals.
After removing the siding they carefully pryed away the door facing.
They
discovered it was only water damage. Whew! I was hoping it
wasn't termites. Prior to
purchase, our home
inspection showed no sign of termites. Later, Orkin
Pest Control also showed
no sign of
termites. I was praying this was something simple.
Here's
the test hole Mike poked through the sill when he inspected the damage. Turns out it was only dry
rot.
Mike's crew tested the sill either side of the door and found it to be sound. They cut out the bad part and removed it.
The joists were resting on the cinder block foundation so they were unaffected.
They replaced the damaged piece with a new, pressure treated 2" X 8".
It took a bit of coaxing to pound the thing in place.
There we are -- good as new!
A
few days later, see what a great job Mike's crew did matching and
replacing the siding. His son used
a hot air gun and removed the
old putty. Then he used new putty to smooth and repair the siding
where
the old stair rails had been.
After painting, you can't tell the repairs from the original. These guys are the best!
